The Vulnerability and Resilience of Immigrant Families by Maria Guerrero
In every corner of the world, immigrant families face a myriad of
challenges, navigating daily life with a blend of fear and a lack of information. While
there are social programs and organizations specifically created to support
foreigners in adapting to a new culture and country, many of these families shy away
from seeking help due to the fear of judgment and disqualification.
One significant challenge is the daily fear that immigrant families endure. Fear, either
of the unknown or repercussions, often prevents them from accessing social
services or seeking assistance. The concern that seeking help may impact their
immigration process with USCIS adds an additional layer of anxiety.
Discrimination is another issue that immigrant families face regularly. Countless
stories and experiences highlight how individuals become vulnerable simply because
they do not speak English.
I can share a personal experience: When I went to a food
establishment and ordered a salad the cashier was rude, lacked patience, and
continuously claimed not to understand. She raised her voice, insisting that I should
learn English. It was a humiliating moment, and I chose not to respond, silently
leaving. At times, you feel the weight of judgmental gazes simply for being a
foreigner, but it is this adversity that strengthens us.
Despite these challenges, there is an abundance of determination and hard work
behind every immigrant, each person carries an incredible story of resilience,
courage, and persistence. While some may fear seeking assistance, it is essential to
highlight the existence of support networks and encourage immigrant families to
embrace the available resources without fear of judgment, fostering a sense of unity
and understanding in our diverse society.
