Civil Discourse

At MSIIN we believe that we are stronger through discussion. Whether you’re with neighbors, family, or friends participating in civil discourse is our goal.

Civil discourse is the act of participating in respectful conversation on important but challenging issues in the public sphere. These discussions are meant to bridge divides, expand knowledge and understanding, practice kindness and humility, all while trying to find a common ground. These discussions aren't meant to have a ‘winner’ or a ‘loser’ but rather allow for deeper understanding of the topic and differing viewpoints .

When participating in civil discourse it is helpful to remember the 4Cs (From the Center of Ethics and Values, Ohio State University).

01
Be Curious

Ask questions to genuinely understand the other person’s perspective rather than assuming their views are wrong. Enter the discussion with intellectual humility.

02
Be Charitable

Give others the benefit of the doubt. Interpret their arguments in the best possible light instead of focusing on straw-man arguments or worst-case interpretations.

03
Be Conscientious

Reason responsibly, stay focused on the topic, and acknowledge when your own biases or assumptions might be influencing your stance.

04
Be Constructive

Focus the discussion on fostering mutual understanding and shared problem-solving rather than tearing down the person you are speaking with.
